HIGHLIGHT
Amdo is a vast grassland region in northeastern Tibet, home to Qinghai Lake, Kumbum Monastery, and the birthplace of the 14th Dalai Lama. It offers nomadic culture, open plains, and key Tibetan Buddhist sites.
For travelers, Amdo offers a different experience than Lhasa or Kham. The landscape is gentler, with endless grasslands, nomadic herders, and wildlife like Tibetan antelopes and wild donkeys. The famous Amdo dialect is considered the most prestigious form of spoken Tibetan. While less restricted for foreign travelers than the Tibet Autonomous Region, Amdo still requires permits for certain areas. Highlights include circling Qinghai Lake, exploring Kumbum Monastery, and visiting the ancient Labrang Monastery in Xiahe.
The best time to visit Amdo is May to October, with July to September offering the warmest weather and lush green grasslands. Winter is extremely cold and snowy, making travel difficult.
